Béchamel sauce, also known as white sauce it is made with milk, butter and flour and seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Some recipes include onion and you can add you favorite spices into Béchamel sauce.
Béchamel sauce is a basic sauce and it can be used as a base for many other sauces, like Mornay sauce, which is Béchamel with cheese.
You can use Béchamel sauce for different baked dishes, like lasagna, meatloaf, pasta bakes, potato bakes or other vegetable bakes.
Béchamel sauce is very creamy and easy to make and it will give a rich texture to your favorite baked dish.
Ingredients for Béchamel sauce:
– 500ml hot milk
– 50gr butter (80% fat)
– 50gr flour
– salt, pepper, ground nutmeg
How to make Béchamel sauce:
You should start by warming the milk. Set aside.
Place the butter into a heatproof pan. Place the pan over medium heat and cook until the butter melts.
Add the flour and stir to incorporate. Continue to cook at medium heat for 2-3 minutes.
Pour the hot milk, gradually, and whisk to incorporate. Stir to ensure that each addition of milk is fully incorporated before adding more.
Continue to cook at very low heat, stirring continuously, until thickened (about 12 minutes).
Remove Béchamel sauce from heat and season with salt, pepper and ground nutmeg.
You can use the Béchamel sauce right away. If you want to use it later, then put the sauce into a bowl and cover it with cling film and place the cling film right over the sauce to prevent a skin forming.
