If you like meatloaf you really have to try this meatloaf with Béchamel sauce and feta cheese. The meatloaf is very tasty, juicy and flavored and topped with a creamy and cheesy layer.
This meatloaf is easy to make and you can use your favorite seasonings.
I used caramelized onion for this meatloaf because is a little sweet but you can also use raw onion, finely grated.
As regarding the Béchamel sauce, it’s quite easy to prepare but, if you don’t have time, you can replace it with 400gr sour cream mixed with 1 egg and seasoned with salt an pepper.
You can serve this delicious meatloaf with Béchamel sauce and feta cheese warm, with your favorite side dish. It goes well with mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables or rice.
Ingredients for meatloaf with Béchamel sauce and feta cheese (for a 19cm baking dish):
– 500gr ground beef
– 1 egg
– 1 onion
– 1 bunch of fresh parsley
– 1 tablespoon tomato paste
– 1 tablespoon breadcrumbs
– salt, pepper and dried thyme to taste
– 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
For Béchamel sauce:
– 400ml hot milk
– 40gr butter
– 40gr flour
– salt, pepper and ground nutmeg
– 80-100gr feta cheese
How to make meatloaf with Béchamel sauce and feta cheese:
You should start by preparing the Béchamel sauce.
Warm the milk. Set aside.
Place the butter into a heatproof pan. Place the pan over medium heat and cook until the butter melts.
Add the flour and stir to incorporate. Continue to cook at medium heat for 2-3 minutes.
Pour the hot milk, gradually, and whisk to incorporate. Stir to ensure that each addition of milk is fully incorporated before adding more.
Continue to cook at very low heat, stirring continuously, until thickened (about 12 minutes).
Remove Béchamel sauce from heat and season with salt, pepper and ground nutmeg.
Cover with plastic wrap (placed right over the sauce) and allow to cool.
Finely chop the onions and place it into a skillet along with 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Cook, stirring often, until glossy.
Set aside and allow to cool.
Use a large bowl to combine ground meat, egg, caramelized onion, chopped parsley and tomato paste.
Mix well to combine. If you think the meat mixture is too soft, you can add 1 tablespoon of breadcrumbs.
Place about 2 tablespoons of Béchamel sauce into the baking dish and spread evenly.
Spread the meat mixture over the Béchamel layer.
Combine remaining Béchamel sauce with grated feta cheese and spread over the meatloaf.
Place the meatloaf into the preheated oven and bake at 190°C for about 45 minutes.
Serve warm, with your favorite garnish or with crusty bread.
