Homemade onion buns

Onion flavored, fluffy on the inside, a little crispy on the outside, these homemade onion buns are my favorite!
Onion buns are a type of bread very tasty and flavored, competing with garlic and rosemary focaccia. They are also very easy to make. Just caramelize the onions and add to the dough.
You can serve these delicious onion buns as table bread with your favorite dish. They are also perfect for burgers or any type of sandwiches.
We simply love onion buns and we usually eat them as a snack, while they’re still hot, directly from the baking tray 🙂

Ingredients for homemade onion buns recipe:

         450gr bread flour
         250ml lukewarm water
         7fr dried yeast
         1 teaspoon sugar
         1 teaspoon salt
         3 tablespoons olive oil
You also need:
         1 large onion (150-170gr)
         2 tablespoons olive oil
1-2 tablespoons olive oil to brush the buns
thyme, oregano, rosemary, poppy seeds to sprinkle over the buns

How to make homemade onion buns:

You should start by preparing the onions.
Peel the onions, finely chop and place into a skillet with 2 tablespoons olive oil. Place the skillet on medium heat and cook, stirring often, until the onions turn golden. Set aside and allow to cool.
Meanwhile, prepare the dough.
Whisk together flour and dried yeast.
Use a large bowl to whisk together lukewarm water, olive oil, salt and sugar.
Add flour combined with dried yeast, gradually, stirring with a wooden spoon. When the dough becomes too thick to stir, start kneading by hand. Knead until the whole flour is incorporated. We must obtain an elastic and unsticky dough. If the dough is too sticky you can add little more flour (1-2 tablespoons)

Press the dough with your hand making a hole. Place the caramelized onions into the hole. Fold the dough over the onions and start kneading until the onions is well incorporated.
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and leave rise in warm place for 45 minutes – 1 hour (or until double in size)
Place the dough on the lightly floured working surface. Divide the dough into 10 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
Leave the onion buns rest for 20-30 minutes.
Place the onion buns onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Brush the buns with olive oil, sprinkle dried thyme. Place the onion buns into the preheated oven and bake at 190ºC for 20 minutes (or until golden brown).
Let cool on wire racks.
Serve with your favorite dish.
Enjoy!
