This ham and cheese stuffed pita bread is one of my favorites. It’s very tasty, fluffy, with a creamy filling and very easy to make.
Use your favorite cheese and your favorite ham, fill the pita bread and fry it in the skillet. You don’t have to use the oven and this is a plus especially in summer time.
This ham and cheese stuffed pita bread is absolutely delicious warm, and cold is still tasty. You don’t have to ask yourself if it’s still good the next day, because there will be no leftovers.
Serve as an appetizer or as a snack. This delicious ham and cheese stuffed pita bread goes very well with Greek yogurt.
Ingredients for ham and cheese stuffed pita bread:
– 450-500gr (3 2/3 – 4 cups) flour
– 7gr (0.24 oz or 2 1/2 teaspoon) dried yeast
– 250ml (1 cup and 1 tablespoon) lukewarm water
– 30 ml (2 tablespoons) vegetable oil
– 1 teaspoon sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 250gr (8.81 oz) grated cheese
– 250gr (8.81 oz) diced ham

How to make the dough
Mix together flour and dried yeast. Set aside.
Place in a large bowl 250ml lukewarm water, 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon sugar. Stir.
Add the flour combined with dried yeast, gradually, stirring with a wooden spoon. When the dough becomes too thick to stir, start kneading. Knead until the whole flour is incorporated. We must obtain a smooth and elastic dough. If the dough is too sticky, you can add more flour (1-2 tablespoons).
Place the prepared dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 45 minutes – 1 hour (or until double in volume).
How to assemble and cook ham and cheese stuffed pita bread
Meanwhile, grate the cheese and chop the ham into small pieces.
Place the risen dough onto the floured work surface and divide it into 11 pieces.
Place 1 piece of dough onto the floured work surface. Roll it into a 4-5mm thick circle. Place stuffing in center, leaving the edges clean. Lift the edges over the filling and press to stick one to another.
Turn the dough upside down and roll it again into a 1cm thick circle.
Repeat with the remaining dough and stuffing.
Brush a skillet with vegetable oil and place it over medium-high heat. Place a pita bread into the hot skillet and cook on both sides until brown spots appear (or until cooked through).
Serve warm or at room temperature as a snack or appetizer.
