Homemade feta cheese sticks (video recipe)

These homemade feta cheese sticks  are the most popular snack in Romania. And for good reason: they are tender, a little bit crispy and flavorful. These homemade feta cheese sticks are also easy to make with a handful of ingredients.
In Romania, these feta cheese sticks  are served as a snack or as an appetizer. There’s no holiday, birthday or family gathering without a large amount of feta cheese sticks :).

To prepare these feta cheese sticks you have to prepare a dough similar to shortcrust pastry and add grated feta cheese.
It’s not necessary to add any rising agent (like baking powder or baking soda). Then you have to roll out the dough and cut it into sticks, brush with egg, sprinkle with poppy seeds or sesame seeds and bake. It’s very easy!
You really have to try these feta cheese sticks. They’re absolutely delicious!


– 500 gr (4 cups) flour
– 300 gr (10.58 oz) feta cheese
– 150 gr (1 1/3 stick) butter
– 2 eggs
– 100 gr (3.5 oz) plain yogurt
For the egg wash: 1 egg yolk mixed with 1-2 tablespoons of water or milk

To sprinkle: Poppy seeds or sesame seeds


How to make homemade feta cheese sticks


Place the flour and diced butter into a large bowl. Mix and knead the dough until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add grated feta cheese, 100 gr plain yogurt and the 2 eggs.
Continue to knead until combined. You must obtain a thick and pretty hard dough.
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 1 hour.
After 1 hour remove the dough from the refrigerator and divide it into 2 equal pieces (because it’s easier to work with smaller pieces of dough).
Place one piece of dough onto the floured working surface and roll it into a 4-5 mm thick sheet. Use a sharp knife to cut the sheet of dough into halves, lengthwise, then cut into 1.5 cm strips. Brush with egg wash and transfer into a non-stick baking tray. Sprinkle with poppy seeds (or sesame seeds) and place the baking tray into the preheated oven. Bake at 180ºC for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Repeat with the second piece of dough.
Serve these delicious homemade feta cheese sticks warm or cold, as a snack or as an appetizer.
