Soft, chubby and stuffed with feta cheese and spring onions, these savory rose shaped rolls make the best homemade snack.
Also these feta cheese rose are very tasty and cute and the make a great choice for parties.
If you want to make these rolls for breakfast you should wake up earlier because the dough requires 1,5 hours raising time (in 2 steps) or you can use store bought crescent dough.
I prefer homemade dough because is tastier and healthier than the store bought one and I’m going to show how easy it is to make the dough from scratch.

The recipe calls for simple and budget friendly ingredients like flour, eggs, feta cheese and spring onions. You may replace feta cheese with ricotta cheese, curd cheese or quark cheese and add salt to taste.
To shape the rose rolls first you should divide the dough into 11 pieces.
Roll out each piece of dough into a circle. Use a sharp knife to make 4 cuts (4 petals) leaving the center.
Spoon the filling in the center of each piece of dough and fold the dough over the filling.
You can serve these delicious feta cheese rose rolls warm, along with a Greek yogurt or with buttermilk.

Ingredients for feta cheese rose rolls
– 500 gr (4 cups) flour
– 12.5 gr (1 tablespoon) fresh yeast + 1 teaspoon sugar
– 1 egg yolk
– 250 (1 cup and 2 teaspoons) ml lukewarm water
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 30 ml (2 tablespoons) vegetable oil
For filling
– 400 gr (14.1 oz) feta cheese
– 4 green onions (1 cup)
– 2 egg whites
Egg wash
– 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon of milk or water
Optional: Poppy seeds to sprinkle
How to make feta cheese rose rolls
Stir together fresh yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir until the yeast turns fluid. Set aside.
Use a large bowl to combine lukewarm water, vegetable oil, the egg yolk and fresh yeast.
Stir in the flour, gradually. Stir in the salt (while you are incorporating the flour). When the dough becomes too thick to stir, continue to knead until the whole flour is incorporated. Continue to knead for about 5 minutes. You should obtain a smooth and elastic dough, easy to detach from the bowl. If the dough is too sticky, you should add a little more flour (1-2 tablespoons).
Place the dough into a slightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise in warm place for about 45 minutes – 1 hour.
Meanwhile you should prepare the filling. Stir together grated feta cheese, the egg whites and chopped spring onions. Set aside.
Place the dough onto the slightly floured working surface. Divide the dough into 11 pieces.
Roll out each piece of dough into a circle. Spoon the filling in the center of each piece of dough
Use a sharp knife to make 4 cuts (4 petals) leaving the center uncut.
Fold the dough over the filling:
Take one petal and cover the side of the filling with it.
Take the opposite petal and cover the other side of the filling with it then repeat with the two last petals.Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough.
Place the rolls into the baking pan, cover with plastic wrap and let rise for about 20-30 minutes.
Brush with egg wash, sprinkle poppy seeds and place the baking pan into the preheated oven. Bake on 190ºC (374 ºF) for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Allow cool for a few minutes. Serve these delicious feta cheese rose rolls warm, along with a Greek yogurt.

Enjoy!

Do you think ricotta cheese would work with this roll? Or any other cheese like boursin ?
I am not a huge fan of feta ~ they look lovely and agree homemade dough always tastes better.
