Homemade Doritos from scratch. Homemade Nacho chips

Crispy and seasoned with our favored spices, these homemade Doritos from scratch(homemade nacho chips) are the best homemade snack ever! And the great part is that all you need to prepare these delicious homemade crackers is cornmeal, flour, vegetable oil and water, plus your favorite spices. And, as a plus, your kids will be very interested about the whole process of making Doritos and they will give you a hand.

My toddler loves Doritos more than any other snack. Every time we go together for groceries we get home with at least one bag of Doritos. But these store bought chips aren’t the healthiest snack, especially for kids. So, when I have some extra time to spend in the kitchen, I try to make kid friendly snacks.

But how can we make at home Doritos from scratch or homemade nacho chips? Well, that’s very easy: stir together all the ingredients, roll out the dough, cut triangles, brush with vegetable oil, sprinkle your favorite spices and bake for a few minutes. As regarding the spices I’ve made a mixture of salt, garlic powder and hot paprika. Aromatic herbs would also be a great choice for these Doritos.

You can serve these delicious Doritos as a snack, along with your favorite dip, or as a side. And let me give you a tip: these delicious crackers go great in soup or salad. Just imagine a creamy pumpkin soup topped with crunchy and spicy Doritos… Mmmm, absolutely delicious!

Ingredients for homemade Doritos

– 250 gr (2 cups) cornmeal 

– 250 gr (2 cup) flour

– 60 ml (4 tablespoons) of vegetable oil

– 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

– 150 ml (1/2 cup and 2 tablespoons) warm water (or as much as you need to bring the dough together)

You also need vegetable oil for brushing

To sprinkle: salt and your favorite spices. I’ve made a combo of 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 teaspoon hot paprika

How to make homemade Doritos from scratch

Use a large bowl to combine flour, cornmeal and salt. Also you may add your favorite seasonings. Stir in the vegetable oil and warm water. Knead until all the ingredients are well incorporated. You should obtain a smooth dough.

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let rest for about 30 minutes.

Transfer the dough onto the table. Divide the dough into 2 equal pieces.

Place 1 piece of dough onto the table and roll out as thin as you can.

Cut triangles. Transfer the triangles into the baking pan (you can use a non stick baking tray or a regular baking tray lined with parchment paper).

Brush with vegetable oil and sprinkle your favorite spices.

Place the baking pan into the preheated oven and bake at 180°C (355°F) for about 8-10 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Let cool completely.

Repeat with the remaining piece of dough.
