Homemade oat milk – video recipe

Quick and easy to make, creamy, with a lovely neutral oaty taste, this homemade oat milk makes a great option for people with allergies or lactose intolerance. It’s naturally free of lactose, nuts, soy, and gluten and it’s full of nutrients. Oat milk makes the best vegan milk substitute, it’s great even for those people who have multiple allergies and it’s budget friendly.

Oat milk became very popular because it’s free of allergens and it contains beta-glucans — a soluble fiber that may offer heart health benefits. You can find oat milk in grocery stores but you can also make your own homemade oat milk, from scratch. It’s incredibly easy!

This raw-vegan milk recipe calls for only 2 ingredients: oats and water. I recommend you though to add a natural sweetener, vanilla extract, cocoa powder or ground cinnamon especially if you have never tasted oat milk. Also, you can use oat milk in smoothies or over cereal or in your coffee and tea.

Should I soak the oats first?

Well, many oat milk recipes recommend soaking the oats first (for a few hours or over night), then rinsing them very well to remove any sliminess before blending. Because oats are a little slimy. But if you try to make oat milk both ways, with or without soaking, you’ll see it’s not a significant difference.  To make this vegan milk you need a blender and a nut milk bag to strain the milk. If you don’t have a nut milk bag you can use a cheesecloth placed over a strainer.

You can use the leftover oat pulp to make cookies or pancakes or add some fresh fruits and serve for breakfast 😀.

It’s not a great idea to heat this oat milk because it gets thick and clumpy. Anyway, you can add it to hot drinks like tea or coffee but don’t heat it up.

Also, you can use oat milk to prepare savory recipes.

Keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Shake it up before using it.

How to make homemade oat milk

You should start by soaking the oats. So, place the oats into a bowl, add 2 cups of cold water, cover and let sit for about 30 minutes – 1 hour. Transfer to a strainer and rinse with cold water to reduce sliminess.

Transfer to a clean bowl and add 3 cups water. Stir.

Transfer to a blender. At this moment, if you want to make sweet oat milk, you can add raisins, dates, syrup, vanilla extract or ground cinnamon.

Blend for 1-2 minutes or until smooth. Anyway, you shouldn’t blend more than 2 minutes because over blending can cause sliminess.

Next, strain the oat milk. You can use a nut milk bag or a cheesecloth placed over a strainer. A clean kitchen towel or a clean t-shirt. If necessary, strain twice.

And don’t forget: don’t cook the oat milk!

Keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Shake it up before using it.
